Strongman Champions League Limerick 2010

The 1st ever Irish leg of the Strongman Champions League will be held in Limerick on June  6th 2010.  The Strongman Champions League is a Strongman Circuit Competition and the Irish leg will see 8 events taking place over two days.  Sixteen professional athletes from all over the world will be competing for the Limerick stage victory and ultimately for the coveted title of Champions League Winner.

Strongman Champions League has been running since 2008 and is in its 3rd year of competition.  The League has grown steadily from 8 stages in 2008 to 9 stages in 2009 and now there are 10 stages planned for 2010, proving the tournament is growing in both size and stature.  2010 sees the league holding competition legs in Lapland, France, Serbia, Holland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Ireland.  Competitors are strength athletes from all over the world, the most notable competitor being Zydrunas Savickas, the 2009 Worlds Strongest Man.  The Strongman Champions League Directors are Marcel Mozarat and Illka Kinnunen who has competed professionally in the sport since 1989 and has been running competitions since 1996.  Along with overseeing the running and promotion of the Strongman Champions League around the world, Illka and Marcel are also responsible for running two of the worlds largest independent strongman shows – Fortissimus in Canada and events at FIBO in Germany.

Since its inception the Strongman Champions League has grown rapidly.  It is a worldwide series that can be watched live by tens of thousands of people and can also be followed on television and online by millions.  The skill level and notoriety of the competitors in the Strongman Champions League has ensured the continued and increased popularity of the League. One of the major advocates of the League is the 2009 Worlds Strongest Man Zydrunas Savickas who has taken part in the Strongman Champions League since 2008.  Some of the other elite strength athletes also competing in the 2010 Strongman Champions League are Andrus Murumets, Ervin Katona, Mikhail Koyklajev, Agris Kazelniks and Travis Ortmayer.  The standard at Champion League events is so high that a number of World Records have been broken during the competition.  The most recent World Record broken was in Hungary on the 31st October where Ervin Katona lifted 155kg (341lbs or 24st), 18 times in 60 seconds thus breaking the Viking Press World Record.  A major attraction for strength athletes to compete in the Strongman Champions League is that the top 5 athletes in this league will automatically qualify for the Worlds Strongest Man Competition.

Limerick Strongman Club are very proud to bring this fantastic event to Ireland for the first time. As event organisers we have great plans in place for this event and our work is ongoing to ensure that this is a tremendous success both for Limerick City and Ireland. We are very happy that two Irish athletes have been asked to compete at the event, James Fennelly from Co. Kilkenny and Dave Warner from Northern Ireland. We wish all athletes well in there preparations for June and we look forward to seeing you at Strongman Champions League Ireland
